The ancient Greeks sometimes combined the stars in this constellation with those of Scorpio. The Romans always considered Libra and Scorpio to be separate groups of stars.

Libra is associated with balance (both of Nature and of Justice). 3000 years ago, the Sun entering Libra marked the beginning of autumn - days and nights becoming more equal in length (i.e. balanced) after the long summer days.
